Show PUGILISTIC PUNCHES One of the most popular minor sports in senior colleges throughout much of the country, intercollegiate boxing this year arrived at the local college with a team of first quality fistic talent. Among the best were Charles Kalani, 185 pounds, Merlin Sprouse, 160, and Gene Walker, 133. These collegians won the local golden gloves and qualified for the Chicago matches. In a match with Idaho State College of Education, Pocatello, Weber won by a score of 4 to 3. Wins were taken by Kalani, Sprouse, Don Hirschi, 145 pounds, and Varge Lowe, 125 pounds. Game showings against the splendidly trained Idahoans were made by Walker, Glenn Clary, 175 pounds, and Clifton Stallings, 135 pounds. The national junior college matches, presenting the best fighters from 16 regions, are to be conducted here April 10, 11 and 12, with Clair Anderson directing. In charge also will be Reed K. Swenson, head coach at Weber and president of the National Junior College Athletic Association, and Milton Mecham, Weber football and boxing coach and vice president of the regional association. Utah, Idaho, Wyoming and Colorado are qualifying for participation by a regional meet in Boise March 20. Enthusiastic Milton Holt, Idaho State boxing coach, expressed the hope that this school will lead the way in introducing boxing to Utah as a permanent sport. Four years ago, when professionals could not get a match in Pocatello, the sport was begun at Idaho State and now draws 4000 spectators. Mr. Mecham reports that boxing supports other sports financially at the Idaho college. Merlin Sprouse Gene Walker Charlie Kalani 24 THE COLLEGE BOOK STORE SUPPORTS STUDENT ACTIVITIES |
