The Weber County Chapter of the Red Cross began in December 1915 when a small group of individuals gathered to begin organizing a chapter of the Red Cross. In 1962, the name was changed to the Bonneville chapter, and in 1969, the chapter merged with other chapters in Northern Utah to become the Northern Utah Chapter, with its headquarters located in Ogden, Utah. The scrapbooks range from 1940 to 2003 and highlight some of the important work of the Red Cross. The books include photographs, newspaper clippings, and other materials. |

Show Red Cross Chapter Makes Shipment of Layettes In Campaign for Relief In Europe MORE MACHINES ARE NEEDED AT SEWING CENTER Numerous Volunteers Are Helping Make Garments "We could use from three to six more sewing machines without run¬ning out of work to do." Mrs. C. H. B. Seybert, chairman of the Weber County Red Cross production committee, was speak¬ing. "I have 15 to 25 volunteer work¬ers here every day except Saturday and Sunday, cutting out, sew¬ing and packing clothing to be sent to Europe for refugee relief, and I could get more if I had enough equipment to keep them busy." Mrs. Seybert was in the sewing room maintained by the chapter at 416 Twenty-fourth. Women were at work all around her, cutting baby garments from huge rolls of outing flannel provided by the government, land operating the five sewing ma-chines in the room. One is a power machine, two are electrically oper-ated, and the remainder are treadle models. Into Packing Boxes At the back of the room, lined with rolls of outing flannel in baby blue and pink hues, were two huge packing boxes, each about half filled, and each capable of holding 90 complete layettes. The layettes prepared by the women include 12 diapers, and two each of gowns, dresses, shirts, kimonas and pairs of stockings; a cap and bib, two receiving blankets, safety pins and other minor essentials. In the year and a half the Red Cross has been calling for articles from Weber county chapter, more than 200 layettes have been shipped to the New Jersey warehouse, and nearly 300 hand-knit sweaters for men, women and children have been sent. Other articles shipped include women's dresses and chil¬dren's dresses of wool, convalescent robes, operating gowns and boys' shirts. Regular Shipments Shipments are sent out every three months, Mrs. Seybert said. This phase of the Red Cross ac¬tivity is but one of about a dozen1 being conducted daily in Weber county by the local chapter. Simi¬lar services to those being given by scores of volunteer workers in this county and city would be avail¬able here in case of disaster. The Red Cross is the only official relief agency in case of disaster: in this country. |
