| Description |
Stanley Purrington was originally from Ogden, Utah and joined the Army in 1918. He and sixty other young men from Ogden were sent to Camp Fremont, California for training. Upon completion of his training he was dispatched to France to become part of the occupying forces at Camp Pontanezen. During his time there, he was a battalion sergeant major in the 8th Infantry. Purrington returned home to Ogden on August 30, 1919. The diaries in this collection detail his time in service from August 12, 1918 to March 26, 1919 and May 29, 1919 to Sept. 28, 1919, along with his experiences overseas. The view book includes photographs and postcards collected by Purrington during his time in Europe as well as some biographical information. |

| Item Description |
The letter was hand written with pen and ink on linked paper with a YMCA header on it. Two small black and white photographs were included with the letter. The photos have captions hand written on the backs. The envelope was slit open on the right hand side. It has a purple three cent stamp in the top right corner and is postmarked San Francisco, Cal. |

Show -2- Carlin, about a hundred-fifty miles before arriving at Sparks, where I mailed the card to Lee. Someone in camp here told me my brother was lined up to go to Camp Lewis on the 26th Don’t know where he got the information. I guess Lee will answer the letter I wrote him, and I will then write him some pointers as to what to take with him, and he can pass the information on to the others of the gang who go. And take it from me, my good friends Critchlow and Krumperman aren’t going to be sent home, that is if they are as strict at Camp Lewis as they are here. They send but few men home. This is sure some camp, about twenty miles square. There’s over thirty thousand men in camp now and more coming Every day. Sergeant Roberts told me yesterday that the camp was to be filled up, and that means fifty or sixty thousand men. You say that I’m probably tired with the drill, you’re right. I sure do get thoroughly |
