Description |
Stanley Purrington was originally from Ogden, Utah and joined the Army in 1918. He and sixty other young men from Ogden were sent to Camp Fremont, California for training. Upon completion of his training he was dispatched to France to become part of the occupying forces at Camp Pontanezen. During his time there, he was a battalion sergeant major in the 8th Infantry. Purrington returned home to Ogden on August 30, 1919. The diaries in this collection detail his time in service from August 12, 1918 to March 26, 1919 and May 29, 1919 to Sept. 28, 1919, along with his experiences overseas. The view book includes photographs and postcards collected by Purrington during his time in Europe as well as some biographical information. |

Item Description |
The letter was hand written with pen and ink on linked paper with a YMCA header on it. Two small black and white photographs were included with the letter. The photos have captions hand written on the backs. The envelope was slit open on the right hand side. It has a purple three cent stamp in the top right corner and is postmarked San Francisco, Cal. |

Show 6 lad. He’s game as can be and tries to smile and laugh it off but it shows through. He didn’t get a letter from home today, and I went up to his tent with the Examiner and found him sitting on his bunk with his head in his hands, You ought to have seen him grab at that paper. He hung on to it all afternoon and it certainly cheered him up. He’ll be better when we can get out of camp and see something outside, and we’ll be released from quarantine this coming week I had to miss my bath this afternoon on account of my vaccination (left) arm. It’s swelling up fine, and I guess I’ll have to have it bandaged tomorrow morning. On second thoughts, however, I believe I’ll lay in bed tomorrow morning and get on the sick list on Monday morning. The Y.M.C.A. sure is doing a wonderful work among the soldiers. They have singing every night in a open air place where the soldiers gather and a “Y Man” leads them in singing the late war songs and some of the old folk songs.
