Description |
Stanley Purrington was originally from Ogden, Utah and joined the Army in 1918. He and sixty other young men from Ogden were sent to Camp Fremont, California for training. Upon completion of his training he was dispatched to France to become part of the occupying forces at Camp Pontanezen. During his time there, he was a battalion sergeant major in the 8th Infantry. Purrington returned home to Ogden on August 30, 1919. The diaries in this collection detail his time in service from August 12, 1918 to March 26, 1919 and May 29, 1919 to Sept. 28, 1919, along with his experiences overseas. The view book includes photographs and postcards collected by Purrington during his time in Europe as well as some biographical information. |

Item Description |
The letter was hand written with pen and ink on linked paper with a YMCA header on it. Two small black and white photographs were included with the letter. The photos have captions hand written on the backs. The envelope was slit open on the right hand side. It has a purple three cent stamp in the top right corner and is postmarked San Francisco, Cal. |

Show YMCA ARMY AND NAVY YOUNG MEN’S CHRISTIAN ASSOCIATION “WITH THE COLORS” -3- tired, and oh so hungry. But its a physical weariness and comes from bringing into use every muscle of my body. They don’t drill us any harder than we can stand and we go through athletic exercises every morning before drill to limber us up. I sure am stiff and sore each morning when that confounded Bugler calls us out (at 5:45 for reveille but I soon forget it and I sure can eat. My old friend Indigestion, it seems, stayed in Ogden, for I haven’t been troubled that way since I came. I always thought Ensign Herrick was a kind of “sissy” but have been obliged to change my opinion, for he takes to camp life fine and even goes back the second and third time at “chow.” I thought he’d always be complaining but he doesn’t and is enjoying himself. It sure would have tickled some of his Ogden friends if they could have seen him today sitting TO THE WRITER:--SAVE BY WRITING ON BOTH SIDES OF THIS PAPER TO THE FOLKS AT HOME—SAVE FOOD. BUY LIBERTY BONDS AND WAR SAVINGS STAMPS. |
