Show Whip Club will do it Whip's purpose, to support school activities and create and maintain college spirit among the student body, gives the club plenty of leeway. In fact, the girls in purple and white uniforms claim that they do a little bit of everything well almost everything. At any rate, selling programs, ushering people around the campus, boosting the polio drive, drilling, and passing out programs at assemblies and theater productions are included in their heavy activity program. Almost every year the club members shuffle out of college for a few days travel out of state, usually California, to support the team. New members are elected during spring quarter, at which time a tea is sponsored for all freshman girls. Each social club then chooses about five of their store of young hopefuls as candidates for membership, and a corresponding number of unaffiliated girls are also elected. These girls are then voted upon by the entire club and chosen for their interest and activity at Weber. Wait your turn McPhie! Beverly Barbiero and Rosemary Wicks endanger their lives to pass out programs to an anxious assembly crowd. Oops! Double donation! Shirley Bowman and Janice Wood collect money for the polio drive. Pin a gardenia on Gerry. Donna Olley (vice president) demonstrates how the Whip Club bolstered the polio drive by selling gardenias downtown. Mrs. Gregory explains the intracacies of a new drill to members of the Whip Club. Seated are Carolyn Jensen (president), Jo Anne Cliften, Mrs. Gregory (adviser), and Lois Willey (reporter). Standing are Joan Crawford, Shirley Hillis, Joyce Taylor, Verna Hoggan, Joanne Milner, Patsy Pollard, and Jean Wilson (secretary). GIFTED for GAB Debaters Gwenda Cragun, Rodger Moore, Bob Hatch and Vira Beth Robson warranted a jaunt to Pasadena, California. Verbal wizards Warren Allred, Lou Visin-tainer, Arvin Shreeve and Shirley Kinsey are among Mr. Monson's debating stalwarts. The champs of last year's McMinnville Tournament in Oregon are defending that title by making good showings in invitational tournaments this year. Mentors L. H. Monson and E. Carl Green gave their silver-tongued sharpies an opportunity to turn the tables and be most honored judges at the Weber College Fourteenth Annual Utah State High School Debating Tournament which was held March 3 and 4. Well schooled in the art of convincing, these Weber arguers have consistently talked themselves to places in the winners' circle. Earlier in the season, twelve debaters packed their Sunday-go-to-meeting clothes and shoved off for a six day jaunt to Los Angeles City College. Vira Beth Robson and Olene Smith came back winners of the four clashes in which they participated. Later, Utah State Agricultural College was the destination for the formidable bevy of talkers. This time Shirley Kinsey, Lou Visintainer, Rodger Moore and Arvin Shreeve stacked up the honors. The Branch Agricultural College at Cedar City played host to a speech tournament February 17 and 18, so boarding the faith provoking college bus, the debaters made the journey to Cedar City and came back gracing Weber College as second place winners in the tournament. Two teams, Vira Beth Robson and Gwenda Cragun, Rodger Moore and Bob Hatch, with Mr. Monson and Mr. Green, motored to Pasadena, California, and took part in the tournament at the California Institute of Technology. Gwenda and Vira Beth tied for third in this important verbal scrimmage. Despite the threats of Rodg to stake Vira Beth to a protruding rock in the Pacific Ocean and leave her to the mercy of the lashing waves and hungry vultures, the teams returned intact. In early Spring these championship hopefuls will turn their noses toward Bakersfield, California, and the National Debate Tournament which will be staged there. Mr. Green reported that as many teams as possible will make this important journey. We're backing you, gang. Good luck! 11 |
