Show The TEAM Boise previously had handed Weber its only defeat suffered during northern division play and made the local school fight down to the last "bucket" in three other tussles besides the final one. The lone loss in league play was by a score of 55 to 56 in Boise. Besides bringing the college its second regional championship in as many years, the Region four tournament resulted in Keith Sewell of the local team being named outstanding player of the three nights and Darrell Tucker and Sewell being listed on the tournament all-star team. Another high honor came to the team when Tucker, guard, Gerald (Jerry) Downs, center, and Sewell, forward, were voted first choices of the coaches for posts on the Intermountain conference all-star team. Tucker was unanimously selected by the coaches as "the opposition's most valuable player." Glenn Dalling, Ricks forward, and Joey Dietrich, Boise guard, completed the five-man honor squad. Use of a three-in two-out offense with no main post man aided the college in romping home with the championships. This offense has more varieties of play than most other methods. Using the screen play as the main method of scoring has accounted for many of the high scores made by the college players this year. Darrell Tucker Help! Help! Larry Woods Pooh to you ,too! Dee Wallace - Don Dinsdale What is this, ballet? Lawrence Stone Oh no! Not sleep walking again! With Dee Wallace setting up plays, Tucker and Sewell driving in for shots, and Downs and Lawrence Stone covering the backboards, the team has been able to hit around seventy points as an average per game. An all-state player from Weber high school, Tucker was wanted by senior colleges but chose Weber college, and his success this season has rewarded him for loyalty to one of the fine basketball colleges of the country. Sewell played ball for Ogden high school in 1945-46 and starred for the college first in 1949. As for the other three boys, Downs and Stone likewise performed at Ogden high and Wallace obtained his experience at Weber high. Reserve strength has meant much to the Wildcats this season. Don Madsen, Glen Ashby, Larry Wood, Sterling Gardner and Don Dinsdale were run into the games and played much each time, often as a complete replacement team, and gave the starters a breathing spell. Their fast, spirited type of play usually maintained the lead and at times built it up to the totals typical this season. Clair Anderson, referred to as "Andy" by the boys, assisted Mr. Swenson in gearing practice sessions to fundamentals. He also steered the reserves through a series of games of their own. Keith Sewell Way to go, Pop! Coach Swenson Pilots Weber's winning team. Jerry Downs Jump high to top that "long John" Jerry. Don Madsen Ready to spring. 21 |
