Show All Out For SPORTS Squash Champion Farrell Col-lett slashes a mean serve as Lloyd Draayer stands by to return. Is this Phoenix teamwork? Jack Buckley grabs Alpharovi-an Bob Parkinson while an unidentified Phoenix man tips the ball goalward "Andy" Anderson, Intramural head, gives a gentle hint to his charges. Gwen Fronk is an added attraction to any swimming pool. 22 Close of second quarter found Sigma heading up intramurals with an amassed total of 840 points. Other leaders included Dormitory, 593 points, Phoenix, 448, and Alpha Rho, 413. In ski competition, where the giant slalom was the only event, Sigma grabbed 126 points toward the total when swift-sliding Joe Brewer raced down Wildcat run to a first and Mike Nicholas ankled in behind Kent Nichols of Phoenix. Basketball first place went to a snappy Excelsior team, which in the final game eked out a 21-20 victory over Shop and earned 190 points by the triumph. Excelsior players were Keith Leishman, Jimmy Hill, Keith Barnett, Dick Galbraith, Keith (Bud) Downs, Boyd Applegarth, Harry James and Delyle Muir. High point man was Shop's George Sheffield, who sank 10 points. Another league high spot came when Sigma tumbled to third in basketball at the hands of Shop, 41-31, during a bitterly fought noon hour. Sweeping water polo for the third consecutive year, to gain 140 counters, a dog-paddling Phoenix bunch defeated Dormitory by a 3-2 score. Winning for Phoenix were Denis Cronin, Jerry Nilsson, Lamar Scadden, Gordon Allred, Ronald Flygare, Dee Jacobs, Harold Jones, Russell Rasmussen, Kay Stevenson, Kent Fuller and Rodney Pollard. The "Sisters" opposed Henry Gramberg and other deep-dunkers of Dorm in the wild, slugging water fracas. Third place was earned by Alpha Rho when that team sloshed ahead of Skull in two overtime periods, 6-4. From the spectators' viewpoint, this seagoing battle was as colorful as the low-scoring championship game because of spectacular goal-making and matching of point for point as the game continued. Six Hawaiian athletes banded together for Dormitory and made a powerhouse volley ball team that rolled over faculty in the playoff by scores of 15-2, 15-13. They were Henry Gramberg, Wesley Kekauoha, Charles Kalani, Barry Napoleon, Robert Ching and Eli Keo-lanui. Third was taken by the LDS club by paddling a wishy-washy Phoenix crew which had given some promise earlier. Defending champion of fall quarter ping pong, Bob Hughes, unaffiliated, had money up on him at the end of second quarter as a two-time winner. Squash title was also undecided at press time. Larry Price is really high this time! Off to a good start. Two tank men, Henry Gramberg and Jerry Nilsson, take off in a racing dive. Ray Chatwin gives the ping pong ball a murderous blow. 23 |
