Goddard '09 Editorial Our Aims Franklin once said, "Every man should know something of everything and everything of something" "Give me a man with an unwavering aim and I will show you a man who will succeed." Girls and boys of the Weber Academy what are your aims? Have we a purpose, a bright shining light to guide us on in our every move? We cherish the memory and revere the name of our beloved Geo. Washington, but is mere hero worship a means of lifting us any higher in life? Rather find some example in their life which we might imitate. If one is so great and good why not try to be like him? Let reverence be shown where it is due, but waste not the precious moments merely thinking of a man's virtues but finding our own purpose in life and working toward that end. The library is now in working order and students may procure books from its shelves on application. Students, make use of it: do not bring cheap novels and trashy story papers to school to take up spare time. School hours are for THE ACORN 9 school work and should be used as such. Those who have charge of the library are ready any time to give out books which will serve as recreation, as well as develop the mind. The ACORN appreciates the support of the student body and faculty in getting out this issue, and hope the future will begin to look brighter and cleaner for other numbers. Begin to write your material now for the Souvenir number. Up to this time we doubt very much whether the students think as seriously about it as the poem printed elsewhere in this number would have us believe. The class of 1905 have presented a silver cup to the school. It is to be given to the class that gains the championship in the inter-class debates. The names of the winning team will be engraved upon it. Today. Write it on your heart that every day is the best day in the year. No man has learned anything mighty until he knows that every day is doomsday. Today is a king in disguise. Today always looks mean to the thoughtless, in the face of an uniform experience that all good and great and happy actions are made up precisely of these blank todays. Let us not be so deceived, let us unmask the king as he passes. Ralph Waldo Emerson When the Outlook is not good, try the Uplook. |
