When Alexander was about 18, he was serving in the German army. Coming home one evening he saw two Mormon Elders Preaching on the street corner and stopped to listen to them. He became very interested in what they were saying and started to go to their meetings, not telling his folks about it. He accepted the Gospel and was baptized in 1878. His folks were very angry and disowned him. Being turned out of his home and without friends, he decided the only thing he could do was to go to America to Zion, so he deserted the army, and leaving on foot he set to get a ship for America. When he was missed my the army, soldiers were sent out on horseback to find him. Once he saw them coming and hung with his hands to the girders of the bridge as the 3 • • • horses thundered over it. Another time a lady hid him in a pile of dirty clothes as they searched the house. He finally reached the docks and gained permission to work his way over. When his father died in 1900, he didn't share in his will . This hurt him deeply, because with his large family and three wives, it would have been a blessing to him. He said it hadn't made her rich, but she said she was rich because she had peace of mind, and that is the richest thing we can possess. She was with us for two weeks when jackie was born, and her presence influenced us and our lives. She did an enormous amount of genealogy. She and rosa obtained hundreds of names from Switzerland, their homeland, and had all the work done for them that was possible to do • Donta died Mar. 25, 1922 Elizabeth died 2 March 1937 at the age of 77.
