Show JR. CLASS OFFICERS: Dave Broadbent, President; Sherrie Martin, Secretary; Bruce Shepard, Vice President. UNDERCLASSMEN JUNIORS The major activity of the Junior class officers and council was the presentation of the Jr. prom. Using the theme "Just A Old Fashioned Love Song" as a spring board they launched their dance into the realm of one of the only enduring parts of life . . . Love. Candidates for Jr. Prom Queen were screened by the council and four faculty members. A list of candidates was thee presented to the studentbody. From this list the students at large elected the Jr. Prom royalty. SOPHOMORES A vacancy in the Sophomore Class Officers afforded the senate the chance to set a precedent concerning replace-ment. The Sophomore vice president, Scott Thredgold, elected during spring of 71 accepted an LDS mission call during the summer, which created the vacancy. A decision was made by the senate which specified that the class president in consultation with the council would submit a list of from one to three names to the senate. The senate then selected a new officer from this list. During the year, the sophomores supported the reapportionment legislation and sponsored a class party. Sophomore Class Officers: Bill Bommer, Vice-President; Kristy White, Secretary; Rob Alley President. FRESHMEN The freshmen received a bonus this year ... an extra class officer! Nominations were accepted during fall quarter for the officers provided for in the ASWS constitution. But in addition to those that are provided for in the constitution, elections were held for a class treasurer. The freshmen sponsored a stomp January and a class party in April. Freshmen class president, Dave Merkley co-sponsored with resident hall representative Ken Lowe a senate resolution requesting senate support in eliminating the requirement for freshmen students to live in the dorms. Class and AMS Offices Abolished Class offices were terminated by senate at the end of winter quarter. The resolution also eliminated the AMS officers. The action was considered by the proponents of the legislation as a move to make the student government system more conducive to the reapportioned senate ratified as a constitutional amendment during winter quarter by a studentbody vote. The reapportionment of the senate removed class officers, AMS and AWS officers and IFC and residence halls representatives from the senate. It replaced these seats with senatorial representation based on the population of the various academic schools. The removal of class officers from the senate constituted one of the major arguments against the reapportionment legis- lation. The resolution to dissolve class offices was approved in a special Friday evening session of the senate March 10. It was introduced by senators Paul Lindquist, AMS President; and Glen Curtis, Senior Class President. They contended that because the class officers no longer held a senate seat, they were no longer relevant to student government. Dean of Students, Dr. Alan J. Dayley spoke against the move because he felt it would reduce the possibilities of freshmen holding student government offices. According to the resolutions, the offices would go out of existence at the end of the 1971-72 school year. Don't sweat it, you'll get used to registration. |
