This general education course deals with the principles and contributions of the biological sciences, including those fields of learning which deal with both plants and animals. Hayes COURSES OF INSTRUCTION Bacteriology It is recommended that a student pursuing a major in Bacteriology complete Bacteriology 1 or 2; Chemistry 4, 5, 6; Mathematics 1, 3, 4; Physics 4, 5, and 6; Physiology 1; and Zoology 1 or 4. 1. Elementary Bacteriology. A general course designed to teach fundamental principles of Bacteriology. Three lectures and two laboratory period a week. Five quarter hours. Winter, Spring. Hayes 3. General Bacteriology. Designed for students of Home Economics. Application of the principles of Bacteriology to food handling, preservation, and prevention of disease in the home. Application of bacteriological principles to soil fertility, crop disease and dairying practices. Three lectures and two laboratories each week. Five quarter hours. Spring. Hayes 5. Plant and Animal Life of Utah. An elementary study course with emphasis upon ecology and conservation. Identification, conservation, ecological relationships, and distribution of the common plants and animals of the State. Credit may not be received for this course and Wildlife Conservation. Two lectures and one laboratory or field trip a week. Three quarter hours. Summer. Staff 6. Heredity. The principles of genetics with emphasis on human heredity. How the principles of genetics may be applied by stock breeders and horiculturists. Three quarter hours. Autumn, Spring. Knight 7. Field Biology. A field study course of the ecology of plants and animals. It may be conducted while on an extended tour. Collections required. Laboratory work included. Two and five quarter hours. Spring, Summer. Staff 10. Conservation of Plant Resources. A general education course devoted primarily to the study of the proper utilization and conservation of agricultural, forest, and other plant resources. Special emphasis is given to present day problems of national and local conservation. Two lectures a week. Two quarter hours. Autumn, Summer. Staff 11. Aquatic Resources A general education course dealing with conservation of fish both for recreational and economic purposes, and with husbanding the factors supporting the growth of fish.
