The first New England Thanksgiving was contemporary with the earliest settlement of the country. The Pilgrim Fathers landed on Plymouth Rock, in 1620. In the fall of 1621, the first harvest was gathered. They had passed through much suffering and loss. On the other hand, there had been much to cheer and strengthen them. They were on good terms with the Indians. They were free from the pestilence, and were blessed with health, peace, and free from the dread of famine. Their corn had yielded well and their barley was tolerably good; and as they looked out on the heaped up stores the first fruits of the soil of their - new home their hearts swelled with thankfulness that the Lord had so mercifully cared for them. Mindful of the Providence to whom these blessings were due, Governor Bradford proclaimed a solemn Thanksgiving feast, and ordered that preparations should be made for celebrating it, with festivities as were in their power. Four men were dispatched into the woods and low lands to shoot wild fowl, and though the game had been scanty throughout the summer, the four sportsmen returned at night staggering under their burden of |
