Title |
Hinson Aquarius Water Bag |
Description |
The Transportation Artifact category of the Harrisville Virtual History Museum contains objects related to transportation methods, from horses to the automobile. |
Biographical/Historical Note |
When motoring long distances, people filled the canvas bag with water to be used in an emergency. It had an opening at the top for filling the bag and the brand name printed on the side. They included a sturdy means for hanging it outside of the vehicle, often from the front grill or bumper. On a road trip, in desert areas, water was most often needed should the radiator on the vehicle overheat. The bags were tightly woven to keep water in, but porous enough to allow a small amount to seep through the bag. The forward motion of the vehicle would evaporate the water that had seeped through the bag, cooling the water inside. This bag was used prior to 1950 by John Benjamin Maxfield (1910-1989). |
