Show BIOGRAPHY of CHARLES ARTHUR MARRIOTT Written by His DaughterMADELEINE MARRIOTT HARROP Charles Arthur Marriott was the son of Utah Pioneers Teresa (Trezer) Southwick Marriott and John Marriott. The following is a brief history of John Marriott and Teresa Southwick Marriott. CHARLES'S PARENTS John Marriott was born March 6, 1817, at Rhode, Northamptonshire, England, a son of John Marriott and Frances Parish Marriott. John was a convert to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints having been baptized by Elder Warden on May 7, 1841 at Honeydon, Bedfordshire, England. He immigrated to the United States with the Nineteenth Company of Latter-Day Saints under company Captain Lorenzo Snow in 1843. They sailed with Captain Davenport on the ship Swanton. After John's arrival in Nauvoo in 1843, the Prophet Joseph Smith Jr. called him to be one of his personal bodyguards. Not only was John intimately acquainted with the Prophet, but he also knew other officials among whom were Orson Hyde, Lorenzo Snow, and Brigham Young. John traveled to Utah with the Livingston Kinkade Company arriving in 1851. After farming three hundred and sixty acres for four years in Kaysville, he was asked by Brigham young to settle an area about two and one-half miles northwest from the center of Ogden. The plot consisted of two hundred acres and is still know today as the community of Marriott having been named in his honor. John was a strong man in both his stature and character. He was a powerful man of six feet two inches and weighed about two hundred and fifty pounds. He was aggressive, inventive, faithful, selfless, generous, and prayerful. He recognized the responsibility of supporting his four wives under the principle of plural marriage which he followed and provided well for his thirty-five children. He was a successful farmer, sheep and cattleman. He was a High Priest and served as Branch President in Marriott for about eight years until the ward was organized. John died at the age of eight-two on June 10, 1899, in Marriott. His funeral was held in the Marriott Ward meetinghouse with burial in the Ogden City cemetery. Teresa (Trezer) Southwick Marriott was the third wife of John Marriott. She was born May 8, 1940 in Dudley, Worcester County, England. Her parents were Joseph Southwick and Ann Martin Southwick. Her father's ancestors were traced back to King Alexander The Second. Joseph was a shoemaker and owned a large shoe establishment. They were originally members of the Methodist Church, but after hearing the message of the Mormon Missionaries, they embraced the Gospel. Her father was Branch President until they left for America. Arriving in New Orleans, they took a boat to St. Louis where in just two weeks, her father died of cholera. In 1855, Teresa |
