Show 15 ACORN Music Room The students of Weber's Conservatory of Music have been given a more pleasant place to study. One of the rooms in the old building has been cleaned, painted, daintily calcimined and carpeted. White curtains at the windows give a homelike appearance to the room. We are glad that this department has such a cozy room in which to study. Senior Ball The most successful dancing party of the year was given by the Senior class on the evening of Jan. 8th. It was a New Year's Welcome Party. The hall was artistically decorated in green and red. The north end of the room was made into a beautiful little pine grove. Among the pines glistened a bright "15" made of red electric lights. A canopy was formed of green crepe paper. A number of nicely arranged cozy corners added to the attractive appearance of the hall. Delicious refreshments were served throughout the evening. Supt. Cummings' Talk A special assembly was called on Thursday afternoon, January 28th, Superintendent Cummings of the church school system having consented to talk to us. Of all the thirty-two church schools the Weber Academy seems to be one of his favorites. In his introductory remarks he spoke very glowingly of Weber's immediate future, and he ought to know, for he has charge of the appropriations. He showed us quite clearly why we should appreciate our school opportunities, and advised us to work for future satisfaction. "Sluffing" English work, he says, is a more serious offense than "stuffing" mathematics, for in real life the former is used a thousand times as much as the latter. Brother Cummings then spoke very highly of Apostle Whitney's great epic poem, "Elias," and recommended it as an English classic. He is an interesting talker, and his dry wit is very entertaining. Senior Sense In order to win school championship in extemporaneous speaking a class must win three times in succession. The Senior class is working hard for this place and already have made a very good start. Harvey Taylor and Leland Heiner represented us January 13th, and won the honors. Mary Jacobs and Golda Engstrom were our speakers January 27th and were given the decision of the three judges. Our ACORN 16 next contestants have not yet been chosen, but we feel sure of "keeping up the good work." The Senior dance, "The Ball of the Season," was given on the eve of January 8th. The hall was beautifully decorated. Refreshments were served. Junior Jinks On Wednesday, January 20th, the Junior class had a party in the kitchen. Candy was pulled, after which "hot dogs" and rolls were served. Everyone had a fine time, and we hope that our future parties will be as successful. Our bazaar which was given the week before Christmas was a grand success. Everyone said that the chicken dinner was the best they had ever eaten. With the money from it we intend to give the best "prom" that has ever been given in this school. We are glad that four of Weber's best basketball players are from our class. Sophomore Sayings The Sophomore class is still keeping pace with the rest of the school. Josephine Shorten and Elwood Winters, our last extemporaneous speakers, did credit to themselves and their class. We changed our colors to keep peace with the Juniors, but we promise you that when our banner of green and gold is displayed the Juniors will stare and wonder. The Sophs are taking a lively interest in debating and are expecting victory in the interclass contests. A very successful event was the Sophomore matinee. Another important occurrence was the "Bob Party," on January 14th. There were three bobs full of jolly Sophs, and the participants decided it was the best and the merriest party of the year. Freshman Freshisms We are still progressing in an excellent sort of way, and we are proud of our attempts along the line of debating and extemporaneous speaking, to say nothing of our basketball achievements. We have had our debating tryouts, Andrew Kasius, Franklin Richards and Yvette Raymond being the winning members. Our basketball team has played games with the following scores: Freshmen 17 Lewis School 16 Freshmen 23 Huntsville 16 Freshmen 26 Fourth Ward 9 Freshmen 11 Huntsville 13 Our class matinee held January 21st was a great social success, and we feel fully repaid for our efforts. |
