Show On July 15, 1962, the mining railroad was ready to allow the passage of the first train loaded with manganese. Work Quantities, and Methods used in constructing the Railroad The work quantities are shown in the following figures: - Deforestation: 900 hectares - Earthworks: 11,400,000 cu. mts., of which 90,000 cu. mts. was rock excavation - Excavations for structures: 240,000 cu. mts. - Steel culverts: 3,000 tons - Concrete: 20,000 cu. mts. - Structural steel for bridges: 1,800 tons - Ballast: 300,000 cu. mts. - Rails and ties: 40,000 tons The performance of this mass of work necessitated the delivery of considerable equipment. This equipment, entirely new, represented a total value of 32 million New Francs, (over $7 million). In the main, it included: - 12 D9 Caterpillar Tractors - 18 D8 Caterpillar Tractors 6 No. 463 Tractor mounted Scrapers - 16 DW20 Caterpillar Tractors with No. 456 Scraper - 12 Caterpillar Land Levellers - 19 Aveling-Barford & Saviem Dumpers 8 CD 6, CD 7 and CD 8 Continental Tractors 5 Rubbertired, 15 ton, Richier Rollers - 3 38 RB Ruston Bucyrus Shovels and/or Draglines - 3 S.G. 58 Nord-Est Shovels and/or Draglines 4 Gradall Shovels v - 2 22 RB Rubbertired Cranes 1 Stationary Crushing Plant - 150 tons/hour 2 Mobile Crushing Plants - 15 tons/hour - 16 Compressors - representing a total of 1, 100 H.P. - 4 FM 4 Ingersoil Wagon Drills - 48 GLC 6 and GLC 8 M Berliet Trucks - 2 Trucks with Trailers To this equipment there was added a quantity of miscellaneous equipment, such as: concrete mixers, vibrating tampers, shop equipment, and liaison vehicles. |
