Show Ogden City A CHRONICLE of any kind concerning Ogden would not be complete without dwelling upon the all-‘round greatness of this truly great intermountain gateway—the grandeur of its environment, the beauty of its location, the sterling character and enterprise of its people, the promise and possibilities of its future. Hence, in presenting this volume we invite your attention to a few brief facts. Situated in a beautiful and fertile valley at the foot of a western slope of the Wasatch Mountains, Ogden’s location is one of the most picturesque beauty. Anchored in this great and wonderful mountain-valley nest at an altitude of over four-thousand feet above sea-level, the climatic conditions embracing Ogden are well night ideal—cool and delightful in Spring, Summer and Fall; moderate in Winter. With the pretty Ogden and Weber Canyons extending into the Mountains from her very back door; with hot and warm mineral springs of almost magic water closely adjacent, with the salt-water bathing beaches of famed Great Salt Lake in easy reach, certainly Ogden as a pleasant place of residence can hardly be beat. As a railroad gateway Ogden is known throughout the continent. Being the original junction and gateway of the Pacific railroads, its proud position in the railroad world has not only been maintained, but its prestige constantly enhanced. It is a terminus for the great Central Pacific System, the Denver & Rio Grande-Western Pacific, the Oregon Short Line, the Southern Pacific, the Salt Lake Route and the Union Pacific. IT is also the terminus of the Salt Lake & Ogden and the Ogden, Logal & Idaho Inter-urban railroads. But it is as a business and manufacturing center that Ogden is making its most magnificient strides. Its factories embrace clothing of many kinds, various food products, including sugar, cereal, honey, salt, vegetables, fruits, tin cans, etc. It has twenty-five canning factories alone, the many products of which including pork and beans, peas, pickles, tomatoes, spaghetti, etc., are standard in the food-products world. The pay-rolls from Ogden’s factories are a most substantial source of commercial wealth. The school system and equipment of Ogden is probably unsurpassed by any city of its population in the country, while its school buildings, churches, parks, public libraries, and other civic buildings and institutions are creditable to any community, its parent commercial institution, the Weber Club, being an object of universal pride to the city. Ogden’s population as shown by the compilation of this directory for 1916 is 33,416, indicating a healthy and steady growth since our volume of last year was published. R. L.
