A great backfield man himself in his football day, Dick was a star for Weber College and Ogden High School. He was awarded the outstanding athlete of the year award upon his graduation from Weber. He was an all-state player for Ogden High under Gib Moesinger. Dick is a graduate of Weber and obtained his bachelors degree from the University of Utah. A veteran also, Dick served three years with the army during the last war. His experience makes him a valuable in the capacity of backfield coach. ANDERSON LUMBER COMPANY 16 _n About The Modesto Coaches STAN PAVKO, Head Coacji Big Stan, at a robust 230 pounds, still reminds football followers of the Stan Pavko who at 218 pounds, had terrorized Pacific Coast Conference linemen as he won all conference honors at the University of Idaho. The late Bob Tessier, coach at the University of California, was Stan's coach at Idaho and lured Pavko from potato land to the central valley. Stan had even a longer last moniker, which he dropped and while he has reduced his last name to Pavko his weight is still faithful to the end. Stan put in some pro duty with the Pittsburgh Steelers from 1938 to 1941, then did some highly successful coaching at Idaho high schools. He came to Modesto College in 1948, acting as line coach to Fred Earle, Jr., present director of athletics. He served in this capacity in 1949 and 1950, 'and will be taking on his first head coaching pigskin assignment at MJC in 1951. Fred describes Stan as ambitious, loyal, hardworking, and with the capacity to generate a fine team spirit. His track teams the last two years have been powerhouses and have been noted for their will to win. Stan also is California Interscholastic Federation Commissioner for the Southern Section, Sac- Joaquin District. RALPH JOHNSON, Backfield Coach Ralph is one of two Modesto Junior College graduates who have achieved positions on the athletic staff of the college. Ralph's coaching here dates back to 1944, when he helped Fred coach football while he was working for the city of Modesto. In 1932 and '33 Ralph played football, baseball and basketball at MJC, rating All-Northern California in basketball in 1933. At San Jose State College Ralph played three years of baseball and basketball and was a fullback one year. He returned to MJC in 1946 and has coached baseball and football since that time, at other times handling the basketball and boxing. He is one of the finest basketball officials in the district. CHARLES (CHUCK) COKER, Line Coach Chuck was a little guy once, although people who look 'at him now won't believe it. He's conservatively estimated at 225 pounds and is solid stuff. As a youngster he hung around the MJC football field and dashed back to his Ma's house one step ahead of the 30 hungry football players Ma cooked for. Later Chuck became one of the greatest athletes in MJC annals, winning eight letters in his two years at MJC. He was national shot and discus jaycee champion in 1946. He was selected all state quarterback in 1945. Chuck played football one year at Stanford and a football injury forced him to shift to the javelin in track, where he became a steady point winner for the Indians. He says he's looking forward to his jaycee coaching. He'll be an assistant coach in football and handle swimming and water polo. His infectious enthusiasm has made Coach Pavko mighty happy the big MJC'er is on his side. In his first coaching last year at Bonita High School Chuck brought home three championship teams, football, basketball and track.
