Show to 1908. During this period the school soon outgrew the housing capacity. When Principal McKay presented to the Board of Education the needs of a new building, he was met with the statement that they had gone through that experience once and did not care for a second trial. Principal McKay then suggested that if he could use the teachers of the Academy to assist him, he would assume the task of collecting the money. This proposal was accepted. However, the Board added the provision that it must be strictly a pay-as-you-go proposition. No work was to be done until the money was on hand to pay the bills. Any time the money ran out, the work must stop. No debts for anything. Principal McKay organized the faculty into a building committee and went to work. The result was the erection of the west wing of the Moench Building. The teachers who worked with David O. McKay are listed in Figure 2. The years 1889 to 1908 may be designated as the period of the founding of the school. Some details of the struggle during the years 1889 to 1894, and of the growth and development during the years 1894 to 1908, are given in the next two chapters which deal with the preparatory school and the high school work. |
