Show course and for preparatory. Eleven received grades in rhetoric, eight in civil government, five in physics and thirteen in physical geography. No other high school grades were recorded. Of the students as recorded for that year, nineteen were under fifteen years of age, sixty-nine were from fifteen to eighteen, forty-four were over eighteen, and ages were not given for eight. During the year 1895-96, the courses of study offered by the Academy were: 1. A Preparatory Course, designated as third and fourth readers. 2. An Intermediate Course, fifth reader. 3. A Two Year Normal Course, the first year of which was a review of the common branches. 4. A One Year Commercial Course, largely preparatory subjects and a class in bookkeeping. 5. A Sunday School Course, short term from November to April. The high school subjects taught, as shown by the record of grades given by the teachers were: Theology, German, rhetoric, algebra, geometry, bookkeeping, English history, civil government, political economy, physical geography, geology, physics, school management and theory and elocution. These high school classes were of moderate size. Twenty-three received grades in rhetoric, also twenty three in physical geography. These were the two largest high school classes. Seventeen received grades in algebra and three in geometry. However, the three who received grades in geometry are among the seventeen algebra students and possibly took a second course or a review. In other high school classes, the range was from four to nineteen who received final grades. |
