Show Parts of Speech: Adjectives An adjective modifies a noun or pronoun by describing it, limiting it, or otherwise making its meaning more exact. There are three general categories of adjectives: limiting, descriptive, and proper. The brass candlestick stood next to the fragile vase. (Brass modifies e candlestick, and fragile modifies vase.) Limiting adjectives identifies or points out the noun or pronoun tt e modifies. It may indicate number or quantity. Several categories of pronouns can serve as limiting adjectives, as can numbers and nouns. O Whose briefcase is on the table? (interrogative adjective) O The couple whose car was stolen called the police. (relative adjective) This restaurant has the best reputation for gourmet food. (demonstrative adjective) Some people have no social tact at all. (indefinite adjective) Sally swerved her cat suddenly to avoid an oncoming truck. (possessive adjective) Three people entered the lecture hall late. (number as adjective) O e The schoolgirl look is fashionable this year. (noun as adjective) Descriptive adjectives name a quality, characteristic, or condition of a noun or pronoun. ‘Two or more of these adjectives, members of the largest category of adjectives, may modify the same noun of pronoun. O The yellow submarine belongs to the Beatles. O He applied clear lacquer to the tabletop. O The slim, sophisticated model glided onto the runway, O The child was active, happy, and polite. 12 |
