Show RECORDINGS The latest in the triumphs of the University of Michigan Symphony Band, is its selection as one of the recording ensembles for the prestige recording firm of Vanguard. To date, four albums, Touchdown U.S.A. featuring fight songs of the Big Ten and other great college gridiron marches; Hail Sousa, presenting fifteen of the greatest marches of the March King; Kickoff U.S.A. With twenty-two gridiron favorites from colleges across the nation; and The University of Michigan Band on Tour which presents some of the music featured by the Symphony Band in its epoch-making tour for our State Department, of the Soviet Union and the Middle East, have received international release and distribution. These albums should be available through your local record dealer, on tape and disc, and in monaural and stereo recording. The Symphony Band has also been selected as one of the featured bands to be presented on the Educational Record Reference Library, a series of recordings of symphonic band masterworks. Record Review, The Instrumentalist Magazine—The University of Michigan Band is great. Virtuosity is just one of its virtues, although it may be the most spectacular one, as when the entire clarinet section plays the brilliant solo clarinet part in Weber’s Polacca. The unison is perfect, as if just one clarinet, giant in size were playing. The band also shows beautiful delicacy in shading and beauty of tone. As they are usually played, it is easy to forget that the Sousa marches have exceptional lyric quality as well as stirring rhythm. Fifteen of these great marches performed superbly by the Michigan Band makes Hail Sousa a recording which should be a reference item in every band director’s collection. THE UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN BANDS The seven bands at The University of Michigan comprise one of the most active band programs in the United States, if not the entire world. Here indeed is a place for every qualified student at Michigan who desires to continue his band experiences. THE SYMPHONY BAND is the major concert unit of the University throughout the United States each year. Bands and tours and performs extensively THE WIND ENSEMBLE is made up of 48 select members from the Symphony Band and is dedicated to the performance of the finest wind literature and particularly that suitable for, or written for the small wind ensemble. THE MARCHING BAND is open to all qualified men on the campus and has earned a distinguished reputation for its performances across America. THE CONCERT AND VARSITY BANDS possess a complete concert instrumentation, perform the best in band repertoire, present their own concerts on campus and often perform for various campus athletic events. THE WOLVERINE BAND is a concert band which is organized primarily for the non-music major who wishes to continue his musical experiences, but whose program precludes a great deal of time away from academic pursuits. Meeting one evening a week, this band reads considerable repertoire; presents concerts and performs for campus athletic events. THE JAZZ BAND is organized as an outlet for the musician who wishes to further his musical training in the field of the jazz and stage band. With a combined membership of approximately 500 musicians, the University Bands are among the most campus organizations at Michigan and provide musical opportunities for all interested and qualified students. George Cavender is the Assistant Conductor of Bands at The University of Michigan. In the years he has been at Michigan his work with the Michigan Bands has continued to add to the fame and prestige of these organizations. Unique is his ability to work successfully in both the concert and marching fields. Traveling extensively throughout the United States each year presenting clinics and concerts, he works tirelessly for the improvement of bands everywhere. active |
