With its abundant wealth and generosity, it has help- 3 = : ed them to fight proverty in time of peace. : One of the great events that hastened this great age took.place on the wind- -swept Utah Le flats when America was.made a nation truly and -everlastingly united, by the spike of shining gold! ‘On May 10, 1869, a hitherto obscure spot in the Utah wilderness, Promontory Point, attained a »unique place in American history. _ There, two railroad engines, the Central Pacific's Jupiter 90 out of Sacramento, California and the ‘Union Pacific’s Rogers.119 from Omaha, Nebraska, touched pilots. Dodge; chief engineer — of the Union Pacific, and Samuel Montague, chief engineer. of the Central Pacific. General | Dodge had.the honor of the last blow. Then it was declared that the connection was made and the Union Pacific and Central Pacific were joined together as the “Pacific Railroad”, and never to be parted. Engraved on one side of the Golden Spike were thes@ ie ble words: “May God SS ntisee2 the — _of our country as this railroad unites the two. great oceans of the world.’ Since that unforgettable Svent. all aie icans have been united, working shoulder to Se in harmony and Baerstanai. unity at our country made ‘possible. by ks. men.
