Show Shari | Shew withsi becau have | To thir She a SERVICE PAYS OFF Malia Francis volunteers at Bates Elementary in the second grade. She reads them stories and she does spelling. Sne works with challenge spellers who get 100%. She does fun things with them. Then she corrects some papers and helps the teacher with anything needed. She does it because she likes to see the kids learn and it gives her a good feeling to know thar she’s heloed them. Everyday there is something special. They give her pictures or cards they have colored, they also give her hugs. Just to see their faces light up makes everyday special. A retirement home is not just a rest home. A retirement home is where the elderly, that have lost their memory, sight, or hearing live. These people can do the everyday things, dressing, feeding, and walking on their own. Kathy Hipwell, a volunteer for the Gardens Retirement Home loves her job. Every Saturday she spends her day there playing games, bowling, playing bingo, watching videos, and just spending time with the people. Kathy loves hearing the lives and experiences about the elderly who live there. She replied, “| don't feel like | have only one grandparent in my life as | really do, bur as though | have 55!" Her jobd really requires alot of work and dedication. Her most memorable time she has ever had there was this past 88-89 New Years Eve. As she said goodbye after an enjoyable evening of fun to some of her Grandma's’ she was touched as they told her how much they loved her and wouldn't know what to do without her. She said, “it made every second! had spent there worth it.” From the 88-89 yearbook staff we would like to add, “Alway’s remember that as time passes and rhe world is changing people are growing and getting older, our elders may feel limited in all they are able to do. Take the time to _ stop and share some time with them. That extra smile could bring a spark of life in to one of their lives.” Ryan Horning volunteers as a Peer tutor. He helps the handicap kids that go here to Weber. He said it is a neat class. It is the only place one can be called a “cow” and know it is a compliment. They have birthday parties for everyone, which is near because it sure doesn't happen in all classes. They talk to the |kids about things like crossing the. street and what to do when you meer a stranger. He said the friends in there are really neat. They really care about you. There is no other class at Weber like the Peer tutor class! 220 “me |
