Show 9m-GIoAA Actiwti&i The Part-time Courses are organized to serve three groups of students: (1) those who work one-half day and desire to attend school one-half day, (2) those who are engaged in seasonable occupations or those who are temporarily unemployed who desire to register for short, intensive, full-time courses, and (3) those who have employment that permits them to attend school only one or two hours each day. NATIONAL DEFENSE TRAINING PROGRAM The National Defense Training Program provides courses designed to train men for occupations in industries essential for national defense. This training is different from the training given in other courses in that it prepares the students in a short period of time for a specialized occupation in industry and makes a lesser attempt to provide a broad training background. The Defense Courses are conducted on a twenty-four hour basis. The courses are of two types: (1) pre-employment and (2) supplementary to employment courses. Included under this Program are the following subjects: Aircraft Engine Mechanics, Aircraft Instruments, Aircraft Leather and Canvas, Aero Repair, Aircraft Propellers, Aircraft Radio and Electricity, Aircraft Painting and Doping, Aircraft Sheet-Metal, Aircraft Welding, Carpentry, Drafing, Electricity, Machine Shop, Radio Mechanics and Operation, Spray-Gun Painting, Tractor arid Truck Mechanics, and Welding and Cutting. Adult Education Program Weber College conducts an Adult Evening School Program under the supervision of the Director of the Night School. The courses and the work offered are of two types: (1) courses for which terminal credit is given, and (2) courses for which college credit is given. Courses for which terminal credit is given are the following: (a) Business Education Courses, (b) Trade and Industrial Extension Courses, arid (c) Extension Distributive Education Courses. Business Education Courses are designed to build both initial and general skills in business subjects .Those offered are Bookkeeping, Business English, Commercial Law, Filing, Office Machines, Shorthand and Typewriting. Trade and Industrial Extension Courses are designed to increase the skills of trade workers including apprentices, journeymen, and others. Those offered are the following: Auto Mechanics, Drafting, Electricity, Household Service Training, Independent Auto Dealer's Clinic, Machine Shop (Apprentices), Machine Shop (Journeymen), Motor Turie-up, Paint Clinic, Public Service Courses, Radio Code, Welding (Apprentices), and Welding (Journeymen). Extension Distributive Education Courses are designed for workers employed in the various fields of distribution and business. Those offered are: Credits and Collections, Drug Store Retailing Practices, Fashion Retailing, Hardware Retailing, Show Card Writing, Speech for Salesmen, and Window Display. 12 9n-Gla&& Ac£iuUie& Courses for which college credit is given are those general courses which will enable individuals to fill requirements necessary for graduation. General Education Courses offered are Civil Aeronautics, Ground School, English, Modern Languages, and others. Any course may be organized if ten or more persons request it. The purposes of the Adult Evening School Program are (1) to train intensively all levels of business skills and techniques, (2) to upgrade the journeyman worker so as to enable him to keep abreast of his trade or occupation, (3) to retrain those workers temporarily unemployed or about to become unemployed due to technological changes within their trade so that they may retain their jobs or find new closely allied ones, (4) to provide related technical instruction to supplement the work experience of the employed learner or apprentice to enable him to become a more proficient worker, and (5) to provide regular college courses leading toward college graduation. As a result of the mobilization' of manpower it has become necessary for many people to coniinue their college education in the evening school program. The length of courses is variable; however, most courses are conducted on a ten weeks' basis, the number of periods of training depending upon the demand for continued training by students in attendance, and by prospective students. Summer Session Program In response to the increased demand for summer training needed by those preparing for the war-time activities in and near Ogden City, Weber College has extended its offerings in Business, in the Civil Pilot Training Program, in Nursing, Physical Education, and the Trades. Business Courses may be taken in Bookkeeping and Accounting, Business English, Filing, Government and Business Correspondence, Office Machines, Shorthand, and Typewriting. Civil Pilot Training Program Courses may be taken in Civil Air Regulations, General Service of Air Craft, Meteorology, and Navigation. Nursing Courses may be taken in Chemistry, English, Physiology and Anatomy, Physical Education, Sociology, and Use of Library. Physical Education Courses may be taken in Modified Sports, Swimming, arid Tennis. Trade Courses (the National Defense Training Program) may be taken in Aircraft Trades, Auto Mechanics ,Blue Print Reading, Drafting, Electricity, Machine Shop, Power Machines, Radio Repair, and Welding. THOMAS D. DEE MEMORIAL HOSPITAL AFFILIATION Through an arrangement made by administrators of the College and the Hospital, student-nurses pursue at Weber College a specific number of courses designated by authorities of the Thomas D. Dee Memorial Hospital. These courses are offered throughout the year. 13 |
