| Biographical/Historical Note |
For many years, manufacturers put soda in glass bottles. If customers returned the glass bottles to the store, they received a few cents. The returned bottles were returned to the manufacturer where they were sterilized, refilled, and sold again. Repeatedly using the glass bottles saved the manufacturers a lot of money. Instead of returning the bottles, some customers used them for home-made soda, root beer being the most popular. Bottle cappers use leverage to force a metal cap onto the mouth of the glass bottle, thus sealing in the contents. This bottle capper belonged to Ray R. Chugg (1890-1984). |

Cast-iron stand with flat bottom for bottles and a long handle to punch down the capping mechanism. There is a Coca-Cola bottle on the mechanism with a small pile of bottle caps in front. |
