| Biographical/Historical Note |
This butter churn was used by William L. Crowther (1894-1969) and his family at their farm on 954 Harrisville Road. Cream was separated from the whole milk by skimming it off the top. The cream was placed inside the wooden barrel of the butter churn. When the hand crank was turned, the inside cylinder paddle was put in motion which caused the butter fat to thicken and separate from the remaining liquid (buttermilk). The buttermilk was removed and the clustered butter was washed and formed into a solid shape. |
