Show EARLY HARVESTING AND THRESHING IN MORGAN. In the 1860's it began about the firct of Sep. At first they cut the grain with a cycle. Then came the cradle which laid it in rows, it was then raked with a wooden rake and bound in bundles with a tie made from the straw It was then stacked before threshing it with a flail made by tieing two sticks together one long and one short with a lether or rawhide or wire strap, beating the grain out on a wagon cover. Then had to wait for a wind so as to blow the chaff away. Then came what they called the chaff piler propelled be horses. This too had to be cleaned by the wind. Then came the horse power. This separated the hweat from the chaff Next came the steam thresher, then the gasoline engine, which is in use in the year 1933, but is fast being replaced by the combine which cuts, threshes, and sacks the grain at the same time. Hay was cut with a sythe and raked in winnows by hand, next came the horse rake and the mowing machine. |
