Show Charles Tuner done 45 Charles Turner was a native of England, in which county he received his early education and grew to manhood. He was born in Leamington Spa, Warwickshire in 1827. At thirteen years of age he left home and began life for himself, and at nineteen he took entire care of his younger brothers and sisters, helping them to fit them¬selves to earn their own living. At the age of twenty-three he became a member of the Mormon Church. He came to Utah in 1861, and to Weber Valley in the fall of the same year. In 1864 he began the manufacture of brick from native clay, and furnished the first brick in Morgan City. Many of the houses now in use were built from these brick. He also burned lime from native limestone and engaged in this business for over thirty years. Mr Turner was married Dec. 8, 1861 to Elizabeth Wilkins, a daughter of Joseph and Elizabeth Wilkins. Mrs. Turner died Feb. 26, 1865 and was the first person to die in South Morgan. She was buried in a little clay hill south east of town, which had been selected as a cemetary. He married again on Oct. 14, 1865 to Miss Anna Bosch, who was born in Gorkina, Holland July 8, 1847. She was a daughter of Abraham and Anna Hak Bosch. He married his brother's widow, Mrs. Hannah Turner Jones, in 1872. In politics Mr. Turner was an ardent Republican, and has given much of his time to the work of that party. 46 He served eight terms as city councilman and one term as mayor. He has been identified with most of the publec enterprises in Morgan City. He assisted in taking out two main water ditches and was Selectman for tow terms. At the time of the organization of Morgan Stake he was chosen bishop of South Morgan ward, wich position he held for twenty-nine years. He died Oct. 23, 1910. Anna Bosch Turner died Jan, 25, 1924. Hannah Jones Turner died May 26, 1913. |
