Firemen Say Red Demon Is On The Run Fire Prevention Week Is Centered In Homes "Burned out." There is more tragedy to American families locked in those two words, more deaths, more suffering and more property lost than in the great, spectacular holocausts that occasionally take the front pages, said Fire Chief LaVere M. Hanson today in explaining the reason for this year's Fire Prevention Week's motive centered in homes. "Last year the Salt Lake firemen raced to 300 homes ablaze. As a rule they arrived in time— but in many cases they did not. Over the nation 10,000 persons lost their lives in fires and 6,000 of these were in homes, he said. With the slogan, "Put out the fire before it starts," a special committee of firemen and experts during this week are con¬ducting a voluntary inspection of home basements and home wiring. This inspection is en¬tirely voluntary. The firemen only want to stop the fire before it starts. They will not do anything but give "kindly advice." "Invite us to help you," said Chief Hanson. So far as property loss and big fires are concerned the national education campaigns, modern building codes and fire prevention apparatus have been winning the battle against the "Red Demon." Fire loss over the nation in 1930 was $501,980,000. With greatly increased property valuation in 1940, the total loss from fires was $285,878,000, reported Chief Hanson. |
