INFORMATION..& PAGE NUMBERS: e MARGARET TALBOT JONES A note of explanation to those who read this history. Your writer in Nora Lund, D. U. P. historian, no relation to the family, but a friend, assisting Ha:rel Case and Mary Forman, great - great -da ughters . The source of my information comes from a family group sheet prepared by Clyde T. Jones of Brigham City, Utah, and the Diary of Elisha Jones, Margaret 1 s husband, which I was allowed to read at the D. U. P. Library. Margaret Talbot was born 15 March 1815, in Wells Township, Jefferson County, Ohio. She was the daughte r of Absalom Talbot of Maryland and Elizabeth (Sarah) Mehollen, an Iris h woman. They were as honorable folk as ever lived. Both of her parents died when she was 13 years old. From then on, until she was married, she made her home with her Grandfather. She met Elisha Jones when his folks moved to Wells Township from Wain, Jefferson Co., Ohio, where he was born 11 June 1813, son of Thomas and Mary Naylor Jones. When Margaret was 16 and Elisha was 18, they were married 3 September 1831. Margaret gave birth to her first child, a daughter Martha on 7 August 1832, followed by Thomas, 1834 (who died at the age of 12). Richard born 1836, John 1838, Mary 1840, Sarah 1842, *Eli?abeth 1844, and William (died - age 10 mon). Elisha Jones, being a very religious man, seeking the truth, joined the Reform Methodist Church. Perhaps Margaret was also a member of this Church. Then a man by the name of James Dunn came into this locality in the early 1840 1 s and told about the Mormon Church. Elisha and his brother James both believed. e - 2 - James left for Illinois and stayed in Nauvoo for 4 years, then came back to convert his family to Mormonism. Elisha had obtained some Mormon literature, among which was the "Voice of Warning. 11 He was convinced of the truth of Mormonism, but as he states in his diary-- 11 My wife was dissatisfied with my reading, so I layed it by for awhile. 11 But when her brother-in-law James Jones came back from Illinois and explained the gospel principles more fully to Margaret, she too, saw the light and was baptized, along with her husband. The Diary says, 3 March 1847; the group sheet says, 3 April 1847. James baptized them in the nighttime because of persecutions. The Jones family, including the parents , Elisha and Margaret, with children -- Martha, Richard, John, Mary, Sarah, and Elizabeth -- prepared to leave for Winter Quarters where the Saints were assembled after being driven from Nauvoo. Mob spirit raged in their hometown. Their enemies of the community would have mobbed them had they known they were going to join the Mormons. They arrived in Winter Quarters. Neb., on the banks of the Missouri River on 27 July 1847. Adversities seemed to follow them as Margaret took sick with the fever and lay three months near death's door . In Winter Quarters, a son James was born (1848) but died a year later. Elisha had bought some property and was building a log cabin on it when he broke a blood vessel in his breast. He was laid up for five months, and consequently, lost his property. This may have taken place in Kanesville, (Council Bluffs), Iowa , because the family was living there on 7 June 1849 when Margaret gave brith to her tenth child, Elisha Warren. • - 3 - ' 5 It was 12 June 1850 when the Jon .es Family was ready to leave for Utah. (Vol. 12 - Heart Throbs) . According to Vol. 11 - Heart Throbs, they were listed as members of the Aaron Johnson Company. The diary says about 500 people in the group. They arrived in the Valley of the Mountains in September 1850. (book says 12th, diary says 7th) Diary says - -that they lived in the Fort in Little Cottonwood, sold out and moved to Provo and bought two lots and built a four room house. (Further on in the diary it says --"November 9, 1859 - I moved into Sanpete County at Mt. Pleasant.) Group sheet says - -Margaret' s 11th child, Jacob Absalom, was born 19 March 1851, Mt. Pleasant, Sanpete County. 12th child - Margaret Ellen was born 30 April 18 53, Sanpete County; and 13th child - Joseph was born 18 May 1854, Provo. The 14th child - Hyrum was born 18 May 1857 in Mt. Pleasant. Diary--"Hyrum was born 19 May 1857. His mother lay sick a good while and only the mercy of God revived her." Note: You figure this out, but my opinion is that all these children were born in Provo and that the family did not go to Mt. Pleasant until November 1859. Plural marriage was being practised and preached by the Church leaders, and they were advising the stalwart Church men to take more wives, Margaret Jones must of been converted to the principle, so was willing to share her husband with two more women, which later proved a wonderful blessing to her children, The diary states - -"I had sealed to me Sarah Cummings by J. Morley on 18 December 1856, and Anne Poulson by President Young on 16 January 1857 . 11 The group sheet puts Anne first, then Sarah. A very sad entry in 21 November 1858--11 My wife, Margaret had a fit • - 4 - and put her foot in the fireplace and burned the toes and all the top of her foot to a crisp. " What a shame. May you r writer express her personal opi nion on this. Here is this good woman , having endured all the hardships of pioneering a life at Winter Quarters and Kanesville, crossing the plains with a lar g e family trying to feed and clothe them after they arrived here on a little of nothing . Fait hfully bareing children unto her husband about every two years , no matter what poor living conditions existed. Her unselfishness in sharing her husband with other women , which would naturally cause her to carry a heavier load in taking c are of her own family. You recall that Elisha mentions that when his wife, Mar g aret gave b i rth to Hyrum, her 14th child, that she was seriously ill for a l ong time. No wonder, the poor thing was worn out in mind and body and was not able to bounce back as she had done after her other confinements. Another diary entry-- 22 January 18 59 says, 11 Margaret's foot bled until it is only through the help of the Lord that she is alive. 11 6 Febr uary 18 5 9--11 Dr J o hn Riggs took the two bones of the toes of my wife's foot off. It is eleven weeks today since it was burned. 11 9 November 1859--11 1 moved into Sanpete Cou nty, at Mt. Pleasant. wife ' s foot no better. Commenced working at North Bend, and built a cabin. (James, my brother, is Bishop at this place). Moved from Mt. Pleasant to North Bend, there are 20 to 25 houses here. I keep the records. 4 March 1864-- 11 My wife took a fit this morning, she fell face down on a feather bed and smothered to death. 11 5 March--"! started for Provo to bury her, I sent word to Provo to Richard, Mary and Sarah. The roads were washed and the snow was so deep, they could not come to meet me. 11 e - - 5 - JS? 6 March--"Arrived at Nole Guyman's, stayed all night, went to Provo. Stayed till the 9th, buried her and started home." (I can't keep the tears back} 20 September 1864--"l sold my property in Fairview to James Knight (son-in-law} and am going to Provo Valley. 11 (The group sheet of James and Elizabeth gives that their son Newel was born in Fairview on 13 October 1862, Elisha on 19 December 1864, and Clara in Payion in 1866. Of course, maybe James didn't buy his father-in-laws property right at first . } October 1864--" l moved my families to Heber City. 1 1 Diary--1 1 My first wife, Margaret, was sealed to me ~ December 1866. My wife, Sarah Ann, standing as proxie. 11 Again let me point the difference between the diary and the group sheet. On the sheet it gives Margaret and Elisha endowed 2 February 18 5 2 and sealed the same day, 2 February 1852. Also it gives Margaret• s death as 14 March 1862 at Heber City, Wasatch County. As you can see, your writer has spent considerable effort to try and keep the differences between the diary and the group sheet straight so that the reader may follow through on the life story of Margaret Talbot Jones, I do hope this history pleases you. It is one of the most difficult histories I have ever tried to write, but I truly feel that my prayer has been answered and that we do have a true picture of her life. Margaret, I feel that you were indeed a wonderful pioneer, and that your descendants can be proud of their heritage. Group sheet says--Elisha Jones died 18 April 1880 at Heber City, Utah. |
