She submitted the completed histories to the Morgan County Pioneer Memorial Building as Museum Item No. 1985-1. (June 7, 1985). |

The O l d Croydon Post Office ~l Do you know that Croydon h a s a differ e nt Z ip Code than the rest of Morgan County (84018). The y are the onl y community in the county to have their own post office. The Historica l Society wishes to thank Mrs. Margaret Thackeray for the following information about t'he post office in Croydon, Mor gan County, Utah. A quaint l ittl e pioneer log cabin has served as post office for the people of Croydon for near l y 100 years. Ch·arles Bunting was the first postmaster in Croydon, but the date he started in unknown. The log cabin was built b y John London, prior to becoming the second postmaster in October of 1888. He built it for a home and the post office became part of the home. From October 1888 to January 1892, John Bunt ing carried mail by horse back (three times a week) to Echo to catch the mail train and bring mail back t o Croydon. Dail y mail be gan i n 1892 in Croydon. John London went b y horse and bug g y to the Croydon Depot (now Devils Slide) to take and pick up the mail from the mail train. He served in this capacity for thirty years. T he next postmaster was Joseph E. Rees (1917-1933). Then Mark Thackeray served for one year and John E. Condie for a short time. In 1934, Clifford London took over and served for a period of twenty - six years to 1960. Fay London became postmistress in 1960 and still holds the title. The orig inal log cabin is no longer used as a home but serves exclusively as a post office. There are thirty mail boxes being used at the present time. |
