D. S. Church Genealogy Name Extraction Program is located (93 North State Street). It was built in 1904. There was a big ditch in front of the building, it was a city ditch. A steel fence was in front of the building. There was a lawn on one side of the building and the rest of the yard was dirt. There were no flowers. A big sidewalk went from the gate to the front door and there was a wooden bridge over the ditch. There were very few cement bridges in those days. A bell hung in the tower and it would ring for special occasions and at the beginning of school each day. Sometimes boys would ring it at night, but they would often get into trouble. The first grade was located in the front, facing east. The desks faced west so that our backs were to the windows. This room had five double seats in it besides other singles. A big green blackboard stretched across the front of the room against the wall. The second and third grades were in the back of the building on the west side. There was a drinking fountain downstairs just as the stairs began. The restrooms were also down stairs. The fourth grade was above the first grade room. A big play room was located above the second and third grades. The floors were painted with a dirty black oil. If you got down on the floor it would ruin your clothes. It had a bit of an odor too. There was also an entrance that faced the south. It was located by the third grade room. The teachers were Miss Gladys Parry (first grade), Miss Lenor Rich (second grade), Miss Norma Dickson (third grade), Miss Melpha Auguson (fourth grade) and many others. £51 i&O -2- The new building was finished in the fall of 1936. This old building was no longer used as a school house. Some people by the name of Kelly occupied it as their home for awhile. |
