Description This is a collection of portraits of Morgan County Pioneers plus some art pieces from or about that time period.
Biographical/Historical Note The pioneer trail passed through Wyoming and down Echo Canyon in Utah. It crossed the Weber River at Henefer and headed south to a hill nick-named “Heartbreak Ridge” because from there to the south pioneers first glimpsed the majestic Wasatch Mountains yet ahead. This trail was used by the Donner-Reed Party in 1846, Mormon (LDS) Pioneers 1847-1869, and others. The first companies of pioneers descended down Dixie Hollow to camp in a valley in East Canyon. Dixie was steep and rough and did a lot of damage to the wagons. A large fire can be seen in the south end of the camp to create charcoal for a blacksmith’s forge where a blacksmith has set up shop to do wagon repairs. Behind the camp is a large gravel outcropping. In later years this area was covered by the waters of East Canyon Reservoir, but the top of the gravel outcropping remains visible. Later companies found an easier descent in the area where the boat ramp is now located at East Canyon State Park. Ahead lay the rough crossings back and forth along the winding willow-choked East Canyon Creek.
