Title Morgan County Coverlet
Description This is a collection of portraits of Morgan County Pioneers plus some art pieces from or about that time period.
Biographical/Historical Note Pictured on the coverlet are: MORGAN STAKE TABERNACLE (1877): Constructed of blue limestone from the Como quarry, circa 1877. The building is considered one of the best pieces of masonry in the state. MORGAN OPERA HOUSE (1886) provided a much needed facility for the citizens of Morgan. It was a popular place for dances, theater, and other civic activities. CONSOLIDATED WAGON AND MACHINE COMPANY (1906) sold buggies, harnesses, and vehicle implements. Also, farm machinery and general hardware needed for farming were sold there. PORTERVILLE CHURCH (1897): A majestic, Gothic LDS Meetinghouse, built circa 1897. It was a monument to the pioneers of the area. WILLIAMS RESIDENCE AND WAY STATION (1869): This was a stopping place for overland stages and pony express riders. It also served as post office, home, and store. And, it served as local headquarters for Woodmen of the World Fraternal Organization. "M" (1915): Creation of "M" was the idea of H.B. Fry, school superintendent. The “M” on the mountain was constructed in 1915 - 1916 by the graduating class. It was first made of rock, and then gradually replaced with concrete carried up the mountain by the seniors. J. WILLIAMS AND SONS GENERAL MERCHANDISE (1885). This family-owned store served the residents of Morgan County for over 113 years, selling general merchandise. HEINER HOTEL (1890) was built by the Heiner Brothers Commercial Company. It was Morgan's first Skyscraper. SOUTH MORGAN PUBLIC SCHOOL (1905). This large two story schoolhouse was built around 1905. It was necessary to use brick shipped from Salt Lake City that was baked hard enough to withstand the stress of the tall building. MORGAN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL (1936) was built during the depression, as a Public Works Administration project. It is recognized as the first consolidated elementary school in Utah. MORGAN HIGH SCHOOL (1914). This was the first high school built in Morgan: home of the Morgan Trojans. HOTEL STUART (1904) was planned and operated by Emma Stuart, a progressive woman for her day. She was a renowned cook, affectionately known as "Mother Stuart." MORGAN COUNTY COURTHOUSE (1891): Construction began in 1874 and as a community involved project took twelve years to complete. The portico was added in 1891
