Title The Porterville Church
Creator Corpany, JoAnne
Description This is a collection of portraits of Morgan County Pioneers plus some art pieces from or about that time period.
Biographical/Historical Note “On 17 December 1899, the new meetinghouse was so far completed that a social was held in the basement. The membership voted, with only one dissenting vote, to use the church for amusement but close the chapel to the libertine, the drunkard, or the profane. So in addition to being a holy sanctuary—a place of peace and worship—the building also served as a place for dances, parties, and amusements of all kinds” (—Morgan Stake, 1877-1981, by Morgan Utah North Stake. p 64-65). The Porterville Church was a unifying force and a monument in the lives of the people; carpenters, stone masons, lumberjacks, sawmill operators, and all others of Porterville who helped build it and gathered there for many years afterward. (A copy of JoAnne Corpany’s painting, The Porterville Church, is Item No. 2017-15 in the Morgan, Utah Pioneer Memorial Building.) The original painting was commissioned by Larry Wiggle, owner of The Spring Chicken Inn located in the historic Morgan Opera House.
