Business Department Manager DAVID GODDARD, '15 Assistant VERA JONES, '15 LITERARY Christmas Sentiment "Are you going home for vacation, Jack?" asked his friend Harold. "I don't think so," answered Jack. "I think I'll stay in town this Christmas." "That's good. We'll have quite a spree. Rest up a little, after this strain is over." So Jack decided to stay. It had taken some time for him to reach this decision. He wanted to stay to the Christmas Ball, given at their college, and he was also invited to a big Watch Party, New Year's Eve. Then, also, Harold was going to give a "stag" party, and these, and all the other attractions offered in the city, made him want to stay. Of course, he would like to see the folks, and be there on Christmas day. It was so far away, though, that he would have to spend nearly the whole vacation there, and miss everything his school friends were attending in the city. He knew his mother would miss him. It would be strange for her, the first Christmas he had spent away from home but pshaw, it was foolish such sentiments about Christmas, and besides, there were other children at home they would cheer her up he would hardly be missed. So he wrote a cheery letter, telling of his pleasures, and his decision to stay for the vacation. "I'm glad we have Jack's room fixed up, and everything is ready," Mrs. Hunt was saying. "He'll be here most any day now. I'll have to go to town in the morning, I guess. I have so much to do, and Christmas only three days off." Everyone was busy in this cozy country home. The whole place was astir with Christmas preparations. The little brother and sister were busy cutting and pasting paper. "I'm making this for Jack," Ella was saying, and then Harry whispered something, and they both laughed. |
