Show 14 THE ACORN The day when Uncle Sam prepares the nation's Royal Feast The day we make the toast to God, from North, South, West, and Bast: The nation's Autumn holiday to His preserving care. We meet to pay a vote of Thanks, let each one pay his share. The day when rich Abundance fills the spacious dining hall; The table's tempting dishes smile a cheerful Free-for-all; 'Tis the Master forms the flavor where we share the feast with love. Pleasure serves as head-end waiter; all his tips drop from above. The day when Gratitude is price list on the bill of fare, When God should thus be honored by the diners everywhere; When Duty is the side dish that is chosen by the True, And we eat from God's own table, thus let God receive his due. Tisn't Mammon's golden treasures we assemble to enjoy; Tisn't Heaven's gracious measures we exchange for cheap alloy; "Tis the Master's private pay day, and with Utah in the ranks We assemble for Thanksgiving, and for likewise giving thanks. Walter Emmett. THE ACORN 15 "The Land of Joy" "I dreamed a ridiculous dream one night! 'Twas that i had journeyed to Mars, and there Found people working with all their might, And everything up there, everywhere, Was just as it is on our native sphere; Some men gave orders and some o beyed; Yet one thing struck me as being queer; There wasn't a toiler who looked dismayed. I searched for the cause of the hope men had And the dearth of tears and the lack of woe; I wondered how all could appear so glad While they toiled as people do here below, And I found, ere long, how it came to pass That each man worked with a willing heart. That no one muttered nor sighed 'Alas' J Or thought of his part as a hateful part. On every corner high stones were raised, And the names of the living were chiseled there And those who merited praise were praised, Hence gladness abounded everywhere; Whenever a fair thing might be said They chiseled it there on a gleaming stone; They didn't wait till a man was dead To praise the courage that he had shown."
