Show 18 THE ACORN Mormon people will be without a representative. We, members of this Republic which was founded upon freedom freedom to worship God according- to our own desires, we who have helped fight our country's battles, are now to be shut out of congress simply because we are Mormons? Is this justice we ask? Is this in conformity with that grand constitution we all so highly revere? We think not. Then let us who realize the seriousness of such a step be united; and following the noble example of our forefathers fight valiantly for freedom. "As flowers carry dewdrops, trembling on the edges of the petals, and ready to fall at the first waft of wind or brush of bird, so the heart should carry its beaded words of Thanksgiving, and at the first breath of heavenly favor let down the shower perfumed with heart's gratitude." Beecher. "They that cannot have what they like should learn to like what they have." A tough lesson but well worth learning. Spurgeon. "I thank God that I was born a man and not a beast; that I was born a grecian and not a barbarian." Plats. That possession which we gain by the sword is not lasting; gratitude for benefits is eternal." Quintis Curtins Rufus. The music room turned into a class room. Don't we need more room? THE ACORN 19 In order to keep up the enthusiasm of a school, athletics must not be left out. The main sports in our school are base ball and basket ball. Without some sport of this kind, student life is not complete. The basket ball season is now about to open; and there will be some hard fights for first place in the league. Must our school be at the end? No, with the aid of the students it does not need to be. We have been somewhat handicapped in getting a place in which to play, but have at last succeeded. We now have a good hall, and the boys are hard at work, realizing that there is no excellency without labor. Each game must be won by merit, which does not come by chance but by hard, systematic work. Nearly all of the basket ball boys are new players, but we feel sure that they will put forth their best efforts and, if we will stand by them, they will gain honors for the W. S. A. |
