Show 18 ACORN that the victory of the Juniors was due to one thing the vote of the judges. Principal Henderson then presented the Cottle-Henderson gold medal to Wilmer Jensen, which he had won in a contest two weeks previous. The Junior orator came forward and accepted it, making a splendid address, in the course of which he said he would keep it and cherish it all his life, and then hand it down to the next generation. Atheltic Manager Myron McEntire presented the Juniors with a pennant for having won the inter-class series in basketball. It was accepted by our class athletic manager, David Farrell. Venice Jones read a poem entitled "Why the Juniors Should Lead Them." The exercises were concluded by singing the class song. Sophomore Notes In the school activities the Sophomore class holds no small place. In debating, although we did not win the cup, we have some good workers. Miss Rae Lofgreen, who is a Sophomore, was one of the three that were chosen to represent the school in oratory. Another big event memorable to the Sophomore class is the fact that we "put it over" all the other classes and became champions in baseball. In the first game, which was played with the Freshman class, we won with a score of 3-2. The final game was played with the Juniors and, of course, the Sophomores won, the score being 9-5. The Sophomore Grand Ball was held April 10, and it was considered one of the great successes of the season. The Easter decoration scheme, which showed the artistic taste of the Sophomores, was cleverly carried out. Everybody who attended the dance is determined not to miss any other that the class of '16 might give. Freshman Notes Lately the Freshmen have been rather quiet in action, but everyone in the class has been thinking a great deal. Our boys tried out in baseball and were defeated by one point, but they are determined to keep practicing, for they are looking ahead to next year. Our matinee was not very largely attended and we feel that we should have the support of all the classes before we can do much. David Peterson, our president, has discontinued school and our vice president is now acting in his stead with the able support of the secretary. The class is now being represented in declamation by Kathryn Payne and Elda Ririe, and hope that we will be able to stand against the other classes and win out. Athletics. On the evening of January 30 Weber's basketball team defeated the Lucas Grocery team at the Weber gymnasium by a score of 48-19. Up until this time Weber had never been defeated on their floor, and they felt confident of winning now. The size of the Brigham City team seemed to frighten them. The referee blew the whistle and both teams lined up on the1 floor. The game started fast, Weber scoring the first two field baskets. Then Brigham made a field basket and two fouls. The first half was "tit for tat" and ended by a score of 14-14 in Weber's favor. The second half started fast, with Weber leading until the last five minutes of play, when Brigham scored two field baskets, which made the score 31-27 in Brigham's favor. |
