Show EDITORIAL Spring Fever What a blessing it is that we have been given the power to enjoy the spring time. The spring is the childhood of the year. It is then that we throw off all our worries and only look for the beauty of nature. It is the time when nature calls us to leave our school rooms and go out into her great laboratory to study. When we breathe the soft spring air, hear the songs of the first birds which return from the south and see the first lowly plants appear, the spirit of enjoyment prevails. We never stop to think that we are in danger of being attacked by an infectious disease that may take us from our school work. I speak of Spring Fever. Everyone knows the symptoms of this disease, but few know the remedy. Spring Fever is a sickness that medicine will not cure. It is one disease that comes completely under the control of the mind. It can be warded off, or at least held to small proportions if the mind is well developed. The mental strength of a person may be determined by the way he handles such a case. A great writer has said that there is something within one that asks something of him. How true this is, especially in the spring time. We have only a few more weeks of school before our vacation and some of us may never return. That "something" within each of us is asking us to beware of Spring Fever and to stay with our school to the end; to make the most of the little time that we have left and leave at last with a clear record. We owe it to our school. We owe it to ourselves. The Annual The 1912-1913 Souvenir "Acorn" is well under way and from present indications it will be one of the best ever put out. The Staff has been quietly working on this publication since school began last fall, but up to the present time we have not received many contributions from the students. We earnestly solicit your help in this work because we realize that we can only get the best results by the united effort of the Staff, students and everyone. Don't wait to be asked personally to do something. Take a little responsibility upon yourself and come to our aid with contributions and suggestions of every sort. They will be gladly welcomed. ACORN 11 A Clean=up Day "Let the mind's sweetness have its operation upon thy body, clothes and habitation." Fellow students, we need a general clean-up clay. Our building and premises are not what might be classed as being dirty, but a good thorough cleaning would improve their condition greatly. It is getting near the time when everything makes a change. The trees put forth fresh, clean leaves and blossoms; the seeds harken to the call of the warm sunshine as they shed their coats and the earth is carpeted with the soft grasses and herbs. Let us then show that our thoughts are right and put our belongings in such an order that will bring commendation from all. Who will win these prizes? Best piece of literature $1.50 Best drawing 1.00 Best cartoon .75 Best photo .75 Best original phunism .75 Sign your contributions with an assumed name and hand to the Editor on or before April 20. Sonnet to Health Of all we gain in life by any stealth, Contentment, pleasure, gold or kingly, might, The greatest value man can wish to sight Is pure, unblemished, natural health. For thee, sweet promoter, strong of wealth And noble deeds of which a man may write, Of ought that helps a life be strong and bright, We should provide. And yet are we, dear Health? Do we in duty bound to thee, old friend, The laws of nature, pure and simple, live? Not always. But stay, blessed courier of self! Our folly we repent and beg to lend Our praises due to thee in truth, and give More thought, attention, all we can to health. J. L. C, '13. |
