Show 26 The Acorn MUSIC The past three months of school have witnessed the organization of three musical societies, the band, orchestra and choir. The CHOIR last one being an important feature owing to its popularity in devotional exercises. Under the able leadership of Prof. Ballantyne, they are preparing some selections which they expect to render before the public in the near future. They are also adding more new school songs to their list. At the organization about a month ago the officers were chosen: Secretary Myrl Anderson. Librarian Lawrence Richards. The choir has an enrollment of about one hundred voices and is doing The band has improved wonderfully within the last month and is progressing rapidly under the instruction of Prof. Nichols. At BAND the rehearsals they are preparing pieces for several engagements which they have under consideration. Their playing at the lecture of Senator La Follette added much to the musical reputation of the school. The band have added a few new rules this year to their organization: I. The band rehearses at 3:30 o'clock every Tuesday and Thursday. This means that every member should be in his seat at that time. II. At any engagement every member must see to it that he is "Johnny on the spot" at the time designated by Prof. Nichols. III. White cuffs and collars must be worn with every uniform. There are no exceptions to these rules and no privileged characters. Christmas, 1909. 27 WANTED. 1. More interest taken by a few members. 2. Some big "husky" to carry Jeddies' horn home and to school 3. Piccalo, horns, altos, bass, baritone and clarinets to make our band more complete. The orchestra is advancing rapidly under the direction of Prof. Nichols and are learning some of the latest composition. They have played at all the dances so far this year and we hope they will not disappoint us the rest of the year. The orchestra is accompanied by Lester Hinchcliffe, who has displayed his musical ability in that line, and the success of the orchestra is partly due to him. We hope that the orchestra will soon be in readiness to furnish some music in Devotional. MUSICAL TID-BITS. A musical friend is a friend indeed. We need more music and less noise. A mistake does not sound so bad when no one is listening. The orchestra is perfection in music; let us encourage it. The person who craves originality does not always appreciate it when he meets it. As long as opinions differ we will have all kinds of music and that is always. What was once original has become commonplace through use; and what was commonplace at the beginning has long ago ceased to be in use. As yet the advanced sight singing class has not been organized, but sight singing one is progressing rapidly. The purpose of these classes is to teach one to read rapidly at sight.
