Show 28 The Acorn ALUMNI We are still waiting. 29 Athletics As the accidents in football seem to be growing more numerous year by year in spite of the efforts of rule committees to formulate rules to avoid them, it looks as though football is doomed. Already a large number of universities and colleges have abolished the sport as being dangerous. The number that have been killed this year exceeds that of any previous year. While most Americans like the good old game, yet the older heads among us are beginning to see that the price paid, in so many young and promising lives, is too great. What football loses basket-ball gains, and from the present outlook it would appear that basket-ball will be the college sport of the future. Football players are too apt to look down on basket-ball as being a girl's game. "Ping pong" or "Tiddley winks" are some of the pet names which they give it. But right here it might be stated, with absolute truth, that it takes longer by far to learn to play basket-ball well than football, and what is more, a man must be in better physical condition to stand the grind in basket-ball than football. The difference is that a football man must be born with a strong physic to stand the hard knocks, while a basket-ball player must develop speed and accuracy. Often a player learns football well, especially if he has matured judgment, in one year, while it takes several seasons to play good basket-ball. The Weber Academy has always had the name of being a "good loser" as well as a "good winner." We wanted the high school pennant last year badly, but in playing off the tie game, although our boys played excellent ball, we were defeated by a few points. We gave our opponents |
