Visit house Contralto Give Concert Anna Kaskas, glamorous blonde Metropolitan contralto star, will appear in concert at the Ogden high school auditorium Wednesday, Feb. 25 instead of March 12, as is scheduled on membership cards of the Ogden Community Weber College Concert series. This popular artist was born in Bridgeport, Conn., and at an early age at Hartford she started her musical studies at the local conservatory. Her ability attracted the attention of a prominent music lover who financed a trip to Lithuania, the birthplace of her family. At Kaunas the young girl made her debut as Ulrica in Verdis Masked Ball. In the audience was the president of the country who was so impressed that he later arranged to have the Lithuanian government give her financial assistance to go to Milan, Italy, for two years further study. Returning to the United States Miss Kaskas worked under Enrico Rosati, the teacher of Gigli and Lauri Volpi. In the spring of 1936 Anna Kaskas entered the first Metropolitan Auditions of the Air and won a thousand dollars and a contract with the Metropolitan opera, over 700 other aspirants. Since then she has been on the regular roster of the Metropolitan where she is an established and popular member of the company. Before the opening of the Metropolitan season, Miss Kaskas has sung several seasons with the Chicago opera. Miss Kaskas has also appeared repeatedly with the major orchestras of the country, including the New York Philharmonic Symphony, the Boston Symphony, the Philadelphia and Cleveland orchestras, the Toronto Philharmonic, and with the orchestras of Kansas City, Grand Rapids and Denver. She has been featured at the Worcester and Berkshire festivals and at Colorados Central City Opera festival in the title role of Orpheus. Radio audiences know her through such programs as Ford, Coca Cola and the Treasury Hours. In concert particularly Anna Kaskas personality and voice have made her one of Americas favorite singers. Anna Kaskas is an honorary member of the American Legion and of the national musical sorority, Sigma Alpha Iota. |
