Morgan Canning Company |
Description |
This is a collection of portraits of Morgan County Pioneers plus some art pieces from or about that time period. |
Biographical/Historical Note |
(This picture is Item No. 154 in Morgan, Utah Pioneer Memorial Building. ) Equipment and machinery was constructed by a local blacksmith and the Morgan Canning Company was founded in 1904 by James E. Anderson and James Pingree. In 1911 James E. Anderson and his brother Joseph became sole owners. Each year continued to be more successful than the previous and in 1910, thirty thousand cases of "Those Good Peas, as they were labeled, were packed. The factory continued to grow and had to be enlarged often to meet the needs. By 1916 a new plant was built which produced up to 1,200 cases of peas per day. Misfortune struck in 1926 when James died and just three short months later Joseph died. In 1930 the Morgan Canning Company was deeded to Utah Packing Corporation and in 1935 to California Packing Company. The Morgan plant then canned sauerkraut. In 1956 kraut canning was discontinued and the facilities were converted to a large distribution and storage center. The building has sold several times and presently (1999) the historic sandstone building houses Morgan Valley Metals L.L.C., a metal fabrication company.
