Show On November 11, 1895, Dr. Karl G. Maeser, General Superintendent of Church Schools, made an official visit to the school. At the meeting of the Church Board of Education following this visit, a resolution was passed giving to the Weber Stake Academy the status of a high school in the Church School System. Professor Moench was notified of this action by a letter from Superintendent Maeser. That year, 1895-96, there were one hundred and seventy-three students registered. The ages as given were: thirteen under fifteen years, sixty-four from fifteen to eighteen, and ninety-four were over eighteen years. The classification as to grades is not complete; however, most of the students were enrolled as preparatory, intermediate, Sunday School, and first year normal, and, therefore, studied the elementary branches. As already noted, the high school classes were not large. Three students graduated on June 11, 1896, as the first high school graduating class of Weber. There is a little confusion on the point of graduates. In some years preceding 1895-96, commencement exercises were held, and certain certificates were issued. There is no record of these certificates, either as to the number, as to whom given, or as to the subjects involved. A few of these certificates are known to exist. In 1895-96, the school was officially recognized as a high school by the General Church Board of Education. From that time on a careful record of graduates has been preserved.
