Show named the Region Seven Coach of the Year in 1979. The womens golf program was one of most sucessful athletic ventures of the college. Coaches of the team were Mac Madsen 1978-1979, Mike Farrell 1979-1980 to 1982-1983, Rick Mears 1983-1984, and Carl Lynn 1984-1985 to 1986-1987. The sport competed in the College Division throughout its existence. After a reasonable showing during its first three seasons, the womens team won the AIAW Division Two National Championship in 1982. Heidi Wallin was medalist for the tournament, Kerri Clark placed third, and Lori Vegwert took fifth. All three received Ail-American honors for their finishes in the tournament. The Lady Wildcats did not repeat as national champions in 1983 or 1984 but on both occasions two Weber golfers were invited to participate in the NCAA Division One Womens Golf Championships. In 1983 Clark and Vegwert were so honored and in 1984 Clark and Carolina Fernandez received a similar distinction. In 1984-1985 the team won the NCAA Division Two Championship. Fernandez was the tourney medalist, Kerri Clark was second and both were accorded All-Ameri-can honors. The entire team was also invited to play in the Division One tournament, the first time a Division Two team had been so honored. In the teams last full year of competition, 1985-1986, Weber placed third in the Division Two tournament with Chris Newton and Becky Whit-worth earning Ail-American status and being invited to the Division One tournament. Although clearly a successful program, it was cut after completing its spring schedule of 1986-1987, as the athletic depart-ment attempted to concentrate its financial resources in conference sports. The womens volleyball program struggled while Weber was a member of the IAC. During the 1970s Webers strongest showing in the league was a tie for sixth in 1975. The teams record improved considerably after moving to the MWAC. In 1982 the team logged a 23-20 overall record and 8-6 in conference play for a fourth place league finish. The team also participated that year in post season play for the first time. The Lady Wildcats dropped into the second division of the league during the next two years but under Coach Cindy Fredrick has improved annually during the last three seasons so that in 1987 they finished 24-12 overall and 11-5 in the conference, thereby placing third both in the regular season and in the conferences post-season playoffs. Only three Lady Wildcats have earned first team All-Conference honors at Weber State, Drena Kalani and Karen Nielsen in 1982 and Kim Benesh in 1987. Team coaches for the program have included Joy Wood in 1974-1975 and 1975-1976; Jane Miner 1976-1977; Kathy Nielsen 1977-1978; George Miles 1978-1979 to 1981-1982; Ted Kom-poc 1982-1983 to 1984-1985; and Cindy Fredrick since 1985-1986. Webers basketball program, on the other hand, enjoyed a significant degree of success while the team competed in the IAC. Webers most successful season in the IAC was that of 1982 when the Lady Wildcats finished first in the Mountain Division of the league with an 8-2 record against Utah State, Idaho State, Northern Arizona, New Mexico State, and Colorado. They were also 18-13 overall. In post-season regional play, Weber defeated Utah State 91-71 but lost in the finals to Colorado 71-64. Weber finished second twice and third twice before leaving the league. After moving to the MWAC in 1982-1983, Weber finished a strong second that year with an 11-3 conference record and 22-10 overall. The Lady Wildcats placed third in the conference in 1985 and tied for third in 1987. The womens basketball team also participated from 1978 to 1987 in the Copper Classic, an annual tournament played among the womens teams from Utahs four major academic institutions. The Lady Wildcats never won the tourney but placed second on several occasions. The success which the Lady Wildcats have enjoyed in basketball has centered in particular around the achievements of Kathy Miller and Cindy Stumph. Both were four-time All-Conference selections, Miller from 1976 to 1979 and Stumph from 1980 to 1983- Miller was nominated as the Kodak All-American candidate from Region Seven all four seasons that she played for Weber State and Stumph was selected for the same honor for her last three years of play. Both women were also chosen as finalists for the Wade Trophy presented annually to the best womens player in the country, Miller in 1978 and 1979 and Stumph in 1982 and 1983. Both women still hold several all-time womens basketball records as well. Miller is Weber States all-time scoring leader for both men and women with 2745 points or an average of 27.5 per game. Cindy Stumph is second to Miller in womens scoring and the all-time rebounding leader for the Lady Wildcats with 1331 career rebounds for a 10.9 average per game, with Miller second in this category. Others who have received All-Conference honors include Ann Avondet in 1978 and 1979, Penny Wanberg 1980, Becky Ingle 1984, and Katie Weyenberg 1987. Coaches of Webers womens basketball program include Joy Wood 1974-1975 and 1975-1976; Jane Miner 1976-1977 to 1985-1986; and Joan Campbell in 1986-1987 and 1987-1988. Miner was honored in 1982 as the Coach of the Year for the IAC Mountain Division. Carla Taylor was appointed to head the womens basketball program in the summer of 1988. The womens tennis team has been coached from its first season in 1978-1979 by Keith Cox. The team enjoyed a much greater degree of success outside the league than within while Weber competed in the IAC but has been extremely successful and competitive within the MWAC, winning the conference championship in 1985,1986, 1987, and 1988. One of the teams best efforts occurred during the 1986 season. They possessed a 15-5 overall mark, were undefeated in league dual competition, and won six of nine conference championships. Anna Gunnarsson won the number three singles and posted a perfect 22-0 record for the season. Katarina Skyllberg and Wendy Compton also won singles trophies and Weber swept the three doubles championships in the tourney. In 1988 the Lady Wildcats were 18-4 overall, posted an 8-0 conference record, and won seven of the nine championships in the conference tournament and placed second in the two others. Christina Beer, Wendy Compton, Roxanne Engle, and Lani Hunsaker all won singles championships. Cox has also been recognized as conference Coach of the |
