Show Women's Week On April 26 through 30 AWS sponsored the Women's Week which included several activities for honoring and educating women There was an Arts and Crafts display at the UB during the week. Channel 4 anchorperson Mary Kroencke spoke on the Women's Week theme: "Roles Women Play: A Women's Work is Never Done " Ms. Kroencke, who had been with KTVX for 2 1/2 years, said she loves the business. "I don't know what else I would do." "As anchorperson I have a luxury, because I can spend more time on a story. There are many ways to make the story my own and be creative." Allison Bell, Nannette Sourenson, Dana Fredrickson, Stephanie DeGraw, Michelle Peterson participated in the fashion show. Indian Emphasis Week Feathers and mocassins were the attire for many as Indians rampaged the Weber State College campus during Indian Awareness Week, April 19-23. The Native American Council of WSC sponsored the events which included workshop, films and lectures. Many of the speakers addressed the issue of how important it is for Native Americans to retain their culture and heritage in today's modern world. The activities included the Miss Indian WSC Pageant where entertainer Regina Tsosie performed, followed by a women's luncheon. Fredricka Gilham won the pageant, with Lesley Morris as 1st attendant and Carla Abel as second attendant. Miss Abel was also named Miss Congeniality. After a fashion show, Serene Hedin, star of the movie "Windwalker," was convocation speaker. Performances from members of the Lamanite Generation began at noon on the 23rd at the Bell Tower with an intertribal Pow Wow that evenning at 7 p.m. at the dor-matory. Various other films and lectures were also offered to the public throughout each day. Japanese Week The Weber State Japanese Club designated May 12 and 13 as Japanese Week. During these two days the Japanese Club had several activities which displayed the Japanese culture and lifestyle. May 12, members performed Japanese dances and played folk music on the traditional instrument, the koto. A short film and discussion about Japan was hosted by Ken Ohta of the Japan Air Lines Denver office. A Japanese movie was shown in the U.B. Little Theater called "Women of the Dunes" on Wednesday and Thursday. Demonstrations of Origami, the art of paper folding, and brush calligraphy were displayed in the Union Bldg. lobby. Japanese food was served from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. each day. The WSC Japanese Club was advised by Ms. Kazuku Monobe and Ms. Mayumi Mukai. |
