Rich prize of fifty dollars is offered for contests in oratory between students of Weber and the Ogden High School. These contests occur each year on the 9th of April. (2) The J. S. Lewis Co. gold medal is offered each year to the students of Weber for contests in extemporaneous speaking. In addition to these, several special prizes are offered each year. DramaThe third annual play to be presented by the Academy Dramatic department was the famous war drama, "Secret Service," by William Gillette. This was presented by special permission of the author. The G. A. R. veterans witnessed the second performance in the Orpheum theatre. Forty students received expert coaching in stage conventions and character interpretation. Certain requirements of voice and body technique are essential for all dramatic aspirants. Merit in scholarship is one of the essentials, and preference is given to upper classmen, ability being equal. The "Secret Service" company journeyed to Logan and saw the beautiful northern city, besides obtaining the valuable experience of acting in new quarters. Pins are awarded to principals in the cast. The Public Service BureauThis is a school organization to find employment for the students who wish it, to furnish gratuitously a complete or partial program of music or recitations for any recognized organization, and to render assistance to any civic betterment within their power. Public questions are discussed and co-operation with municipal activities is desired. WEBER ACADEMY PAGE 19 During the past year about sixty programs have been furnished, over fifty students have been given employment and letters have been sent to all merchants asking their assistance. Any person of the city, attending any school, is eligible to advice and assistance from this bureau. AthleticsOur most important game is basketball. This is played during the winter months. To stimulate interest and to encourage school spirit, Weber has joined the Church and State High School basketball leagues. Track work and baseball are engaged in during the spring months. The school now has two fine tennis courts, which are in use from morning until night. Tennis is fast becoming popular with the students, because of the clean, healthful exercise. Much interest is added to athletics in the school by the inter-class contests in basketball, baseball, track and tennis. |
